The Experience
Drive through neat rows of poplars to reach this farmhouse and annexe, set in a small valley and surrounded by lawns, flowers and herbs. Although the property is one of three self-catering properties on the estate, they’re set a good distance from each other and any neighbours so you feel very private.
Both the house and the annexe – the former hayloft – have modern comforts such as air conditioning but still retain a traditional feel. Both have their own living areas and kitchens, where you’ll find supplies for a first breakfast and a bottle of estate rosé and olive oil. If it rains you can settle down in a comfy sofa next to the fireplace with a book or a DVD, or play billiards in the sunroom of the main house; if it’s sunny you can swim in the pool, spend time in the jacuzzi or have a barbecue.
The Valdera has largely conserved its farming origins and feels away from the tourist masses, but Pisa is only 45 minutes’ drive and Florence and Siena are 1.5 hours. Consult the thick binder filled with suggestions on the local area, from where to take children to how to enjoy a day at the seaside – you can go for a wine tour and tasting on the estate too.

Location
The neighbourhood
Nearby Forcoli offers all the basics for food shopping and a bank and pharmacy, and the nearest restaurant, Ristorante Pettirosso in Palaia, is less than 10 minutes’ drive away. There are nearly 70 km of well-marked walking paths meandering through the immediate surroundings of the estate, and guided walks with truffle hunters can be arranged along with countryside tours on Vespas. Pontedera (15 km) is the closest hub, with a train station offering links to Pisa, Florence, Lucca, the seaside and beyond.

Introducing
Silvia Caroti
Julia and Guy Hands have travelled and worked around the world, but fell in love with this area of Italy years ago. After they bought Villa Saletta, they hired a dynamic and youthful team to manage the winery, rental villas and several ambitious future projects. Silvia is the main contact for guests. She is enthusiastic, knowledgeable and is well-connected locally as she's from nearby Ponsacco.
Absolutely every detail has been thought of to guarantee total comfort and privacy in this historic countryside setting. You will not want to miss learning more about Villa Saletta's winery and farming, especially on a guided walk through the vineyards or a truffle hunt in the woods. The Valdera is a surprisingly rich territory for foodies, walkers and art lovers.
