The Experience

In the foothills of the Apennines this honey-hued farmhouse has a wonderful, easy-going feel to it. Pitch up with friends or family and enjoy splashing in the pool, barbecuing and eating under the shady loggia and disappearing to a quiet spot, indoors or out, when you just want to read a book.

Light and airy bedrooms are spread over three floors, with a mezzanine room at the very top and an en suite master in the middle with a Juliet balcony and stunning views. Kids will delight in the games room, dressing up box, DVDs, swings and more.

You’re in the hills with views stretching for miles and it’s a drive to the nearest town, Umbertide, for supplies. An Umbrian gem next to the Tiber River, it’s vibrant with an old world atmosphere. Mooch around the pretty piazzas, stop for a cappuccino in an outdoor café, visit the octagonal Collegiata church. There are foodie markets to pick up fresh produce to cook back in the smart kitchen.

Reviews

Casa Matira is in a stunning rural location in the hills on the Tuscan/Umbrian borders. The views from the house and garden are of the hills and valleys which typify this area. The house is large and comfortable, each bedroom is a good size, (we didn't use the attic room). The kitchen is well eqipped and there are two eating areas, one inside and the second on the terrace, which flows well. The swimming pool and pool area is lovely, we enjoyed the outdoor pizza oven too. We played pool, table tennis and many board games. All in all, a great house for a fabulous family holiday.

Sandy

As soon as you walk into Casa Matira, you immediately feel you are in a much-loved, easy-going family home. The large, country kitchen is the hub of the house, convivial and brilliantly equipped, and there's plenty of room for adults and kids both inside and out. Relaxing with a drink at the end of each day gazing out over the rolling hills will fill you with peace.

Location

The neighbourhood

Charming Umbertide is 14km for supplies, you can also hire bikes here. Try Girasole di S. Andrea, 8km, a wine cantina with a fantastic restaurant for meals or wine tasting. The area is known for its wine, olives, truffles and wild mushrooms and you can book a cookery lesson at Calagrana (7km). Perugia is 40 mins, a cosmopolitan city with a rich history - gawp at Renaissance frescoes by Raphael.

Local points of interest from Rachel Buxton

  • Enjoy the peace and tranquility of Casa Matira's elevated location - soak up the panoramic views while enjoying the swimming pool, the grounds and local walks. Spectacular sunsets and star gazing - enjoy perhaps with cocktails in hand on the terrace.
  • Enjoy al fresco dining - even try your hand at making pizzas in our wood fired pizza oven (alternatively ask to book a pizziaiolo to make pizzas for you).
  • The central location of Casa Matira offers you the opportunity to visit gorgeous local towns such as Perugia, Assisi, Gubbio (all within 45 mins) and further afield the likes of Siena, Florence and Pisa - the gems of Tuscany and Umbria.
  • Great local restaurants: Agriturismo Calagrana, I Girasoli di San Andrea, Locanda Nonna Gelsa.
  • Within easy reach of Antognolla Golf Spa Resort.
  • Visit Lago Trasimeno - take a ferry from Tuoro or Castiglione del Lago to the Isola Maggiore on the lake. A fun day out for all ages on the lake and island.

Introducing

Rachel Buxton

The British owners adore Italy and embarked on a bit of a project when they bought Casa Matira, converting it back into a traditional country farmhouse from three apartments. They replaced all the windows and shutters, created three ground floor arches and constructed the loggia, uncovered the view and created the garden. Calm and welcoming Antonella manages the property and looks after guests.
