The Experience
Well-travelled Martina and Andreas from Vienna are full of love for their new venture: a restaurant with apartments (and rooms) in Umbria. It’s a ‘casa padronale’ plus outbuildings, above which teeters lovely Montone. The self-catering apartments are in the main house, spread over the first and second floors, most with a big open fireplace, all with a kitchenette or kitchen. Find original beams and terracotta floors, charming wrought-iron beds and antique chandeliers, embroidered white cotton and light-filled bathrooms that range from small to vast: there’s a fresh and beautiful simplicity. The rustic restaurant in the old stables is the perfect setting for seasonal regional fare in Slow Food style, where ingredients are home-grown or from the local farms and the dishes are deliciously Umbrian (with warm apple strudel for pudding if you’re lucky); there’s a grocer’s shop, too. Montone is a joy to explore: atmospheric churches and cobbled squares, cafés, bars and a film festival in July. Wend your way back down the hill to a garden of sunflowers and birds, lawns mown by sheep and a charming pool. A gem!

Fabulous place, relaxing and comfortable accommodation. Friendly and informative hosts. Martina's food is fantastic and very reasonably priced. The kids loved the pool area and there is also quiet time around the pool for adults. Great location and altogether a wonderful stay.

Our stay at L'Ariete was wonderful, all the things a holiday should be. An extraordinary combination of wonderful, artisanal food (beautifully cooked by Martina) and our daily invigorating climb up to Montone meant that we left feeling refreshed and full of energy - exactly what we were hoping for. The film festival that was on while we were there was the icing on the cake. Martina and Andreas could not have been more kind and helpful - offering excellent advice on possible places to visit. We wouldn't hesitate to recommend L'Ariete and are already looking forward to returning next year.

The neighbourhood
Local points of interest from Andreas Sax
- Fancy hiking? We have created circular walks in to the Umbrian hills and woods, through vineyards and olive groves, that start right from our front-door. Maps, directions and valuable information is provided by us.
- Fancy biking? The area offers wonderful opportunities both for road and mountainbikers. They have a couple of things in common: little or no traffic, amazing scenery - and they are demanding! We can arrange bike rental, too.
- Want to meet the local artisans? So do we - and we are happy to share our best choices with our guests and direct you towards cheese-makers or small vineries, as well as farms, local markets and fairs where traditional products are sold.
- Truffles are important to Umbria and the Umbrians - culturally, emotionally and last but not least economically. A truffle hunt is a very special experience and we are happy to arrange this for you (May - November).
- Arts & Culture - Masterpieces of Renaissance Italy, ancient Etruscans sites and the old Romans´heritage - you will find it all in the area.

We stayed 4 nights as part of a multi-base walking holiday. The countryside around L’ariete is a perfect location for easy/moderate walking in unspoilt countryside. You can do a number of signposted circular walks from the front door. The setup at L’ariete itself was perfect for our needs. The accommodation was spacious, clean and tasteful and with glorious views of the open countryside - (and orioles and hoopoes). Great choice of local/seasonal produce (strongly recommend buying the olive oil). Andreas and Martina are great hosts and work hard to create a friendly, unhurried atmosphere.
