The Experience
Bask on your roof terrace with a coffee in the sun. Spot the fishing and sailboats puttering around the Ilha da Culatra as they head out of harbour. What more perfect way to start the day?
This chic, white, sunlit apartment, down a peaceful cobbled alley in the Old Town, is guaranteed to please. Not just its roof terrace, but its location: a one-minute stroll from restaurants and cafés, and close to the magnificent market hall.
The tranquil port of Olhão is on the edge of the Parque Natural da Ria Formosa, a vast lagoon teeming with birds. If you have a car, it’s 30km from Tavira, the prettiest beach town on the Algarve. Closer to home are the paradise isles Culatra and Armona, where you can swim and bask on the sands; the ferry is a 20-minute ride. Return at dusk, totter up to your terrace, light the barbecue, and watch the sun go down behind the hills.

Location
The neighbourhood
You're in the charming old quarter of Olhão, a peaceful fishing port in the Algarve. Everything's on your doorstep: grocery shops, markets, restaurants... and Tapas e Lendas is a must. Close too are the salt flats where locals go clamming and crabbing; and the ferries to Culatra and Armona, two beautiful car-free beach isles, part of the famous Ria Formosa. Follow the boardwalks to the ocean.
Local points of interest from Paula Guimaraes
- Olhão’s number one claim to fame is its amazing daily market of fresh produce and fish. Saturdays are extra special as farmers set up their stalls outdoors, selling anything from snails to goose eggs.
- The ferry will whisk you off across the lagoon to the barrier islands where, during most of the year, you can have a perfect, endless beach practically to yourself.
- The old town’s narrow, cobbled streets are beautiful but you have to look up to be let in on the real secret: flat roofs, formerly used for drying food and now repurposed for sunset drinks and morning coffees.
- This city is a working port, full of working people. This means most restaurants do not cater to tourists, but instead serve everyday Portuguese food at a fair price.
- The food in the south has its own particular charms: fresh fish, canned fish, dried fish, fried fish, fish stew, clams, oysters, cuttlefish, squid, octopus, sweet potatoes, cornmeal, almonds, figs, oranges. It’s all delicious!
- The lagoon system is home to many different animals, from the tiny seahorse to the gorgeous flamingo. Visit the bird sanctuary or just take a walk along the salt flats at sunrise or sunset and enjoy the show.
