The Experience
What a pleasure! A carefully restored, simply stylish, softly coloured townhouse a short cobbled walk from Vejer’s main square and close to El Palmar beach. Comfortable beds (deep sprung mattresses, downy pillows) can be twins or doubles. The Master bedroom (with the spacious bathroom) and the 2nd twin are the brightest, with pine forest views; the smaller twin is cleverly lit, with wall hangings – all have pretty fabrics and handsome reclaimed pieces like distressed timber doors. The downstairs sitting room has TV and DVDs, a Moorish feel, books and games, the bigger, upstairs one, an Indonesian table, L-shaped sofa on rustic tiles. French doors lead to the main terrace with pergolas, sunbeds, a solar shower, BBQ and fine views over paddy fields, umbrella pines and Vejer rooftops – glimpses of Africa on a clear day. You’ve a small, well-equipped kitchen and all the restaurants in the historic maze of Vejer to choose from – it’s a foodie place. Go whale watching, kite surfing, to Cadiz, to Bolonia, for Roman ruins, Jerez for sherry and the Spanish riding school… Or stay close to home – it’s lovely.

Local points of interest from Maria & Mark Matthews
- Vejer is fast becoming the gourmet capital of Andalucia. You can sample everything here from traditional tapas to contemporary middle-eastern cuisine and all just a walk away. We recommend Jardin El Califa, Café Trafalgar, Garimba Sur and Corredera 55.
- Our teenagers' favourite beach is El Palmar where surf shops, trendy bars and hippy boutiques line the mile-long sandy stretch. Good for surfing, body boarding and people watching. At the end of the day, sip a Mojito as the sun sets spectacularly - bliss!
- Our favourite beach is at Bolonia. Surrounded by pine forests and towering sand dunes, it is tranquil and unspoilt. Also here is Baelo Claudia- Roman ruins featuring an impressive forum, temple and basilica. Have lunch at Restaurant Otero just next door.
- Montenmedio Golf Club is a stunningly attractive natural course wrapped around a smart hacienda-style clubhouse. There's a modern art gallery too and in the spring, the Riding Centre hosts world class show jumping and dressage as part of the Sunshine Tour.
- Take drive to El Puerto Santa Maria to take a tour of the Gutierrez Colosia sherry botega, one of the last remaining family-run sherry houses. Find out how it's made (utterly fascinating) and end with a tasting.
- Lastly, do visit Jerez to marvel at the famous Andalucian dressage horses at the Royal Andalucian School of Equestrian Art. The regular horse shows held in the historic indoor arena are indescribably beautiful.
