Lounge in a splendid room with a chilled glass of Manzanilla as you gaze across the rooftops of Sanlucar. Blessed with delicious seafood and golden beaches, the town forms part of the sherry triangle of the province of Cadiz. It’s a shadow of Jerez but far more authentic.

How often does one get to sleep in a palace? This one, in the heart of town, dates from the 17th century and is strolling distance from the central palm-fringed plaza. The main building is open to the public, while the guest wing lies the other side of a magical courtyard garden.

Overlooking the river Quadaquivir and the bird sanctuary of Coto Doñana, this historic palace is run by a non-profit organization, and the staff are old-school and charming. If it rains, you have the whole museum to visit.
