The Experience

In a glorious setting surrounded by rocky mountains and circling vultures, down a tarmacked road find two charming cottages with cosy, rustic interiors and an apartment. Wood-burning stoves keep you warm on cool evenings and you can barbecue on your private terrace when it’s balmy. A delightful inner courtyard filled with shrubs and flowers has cushioned benches for sitting quietly with a book or just enjoying the peace. Laze by the pool by day, or night – perfect for stargazing.

Landscaped gardens lead down to the horses: June and Clive, your kind, easy-going English hosts run an ethical horse rescue and riding centre. They can lead you on sure-footed, gentle horses through open fields, cool pine forests, olive groves and streams with gorgeous views. They also run courses on ethical horsemanship.

Non-riders can walk, climb, drink from mountain springs or just nod off in the shade. You’ll feel relaxed and happy in the atmosphere here.

Reviews

We loved our relaxing and beautiful stay at Cortijo los Lobos. It’s a very special place where we enjoyed swimming in the pool with views of the mountains, horse riding and stargazing. Our children loved playing with all of the animals. June and Clive have put so much care and attention into their environment. Thanks for a lovely holiday!

Once again Sawdays never lets us down, having found the perfect stay for our needs. Our criteria is always nature, peace, authenticity, high standards and experience. Cortijoloslobos is all of the above and more. Clearly a labour of love, June & Clive have created a sanctuary for themselves, animals and their guests, up in the hills. If it is escapism that you are looking for, yet only 10mins from a great locals town and an hour from the buzz of Marbella, this is the place for you. Wonderful stay, great memories!

Four of us spent a delightful 5 nights in El Establo cottage, which offered everything we wished for. June and Clive have created a wonderful place to stay, with a rustic charm, lots of comfort, and of course the gorgeous pool and pool area (essential when temperatures get close to 35C). The local village offers some friendly al fresco dining, and Malaga / Med is just 45 minutes drive away.

Our second visit, returning after 5 years. Clive and June gave us the most wonderful warm welcome and showed us our accommodation - the secret garden. What a delightful cosy retreat, very private, our own rock pool and garden. We will be back again very soon If you’re looking to get away from the rat race and want to recharge, this is the place to come.

The perfect rural retreat. surrounded by mountains bathed in sunshine. With Junes & Clive's gorgeous animals for company as desired. an hour away from so many of Spain's amazing 'must see' places to visit. The accommodation is traditional Spanish style with all mod cons, so cosy and comfy and homely. The pool is the perfect way to cool off when sunbathing gets a little warm. There are fabulous walk routes to enjoy the stunning scenery and horse riding available for those that want to. June and Clive's make everyone so welcome and are the perfect hosts. I can't wait to return.

Beverley, St. Neots

Beautiful gem of a place in the Andalusian countryside. Stunning mountain views and fantastic walking trails. So much to do in the area. June and Clive are fantastic hosts and work so hard to look after their guests. The animals make the place very special and its a treat to spend time with them.

Cortijo Los Lobos is a gem of a place. The various homes have been beautifully made and maintained by the owners. It's in a lovely place - views of the mountains, great walks etc, but still within reach of Malaga and the coast. I've visited five times (I think!) and have enjoyed every stay. The Secret Garden is the newest place, and it looks fab. June and Clive are wonderful hosts. I can thoroughly recommend them.

Sue, Wisbech

We loved every minute of our stay. It really is very beautiful in every sense, from the soaring mountains where eagles can be seen circling high above and ibex spotted amongst the crags, to the undulating hills with olive trees and pine forests, home to a myriad sonorous birds. You can hike, bike, ride or wander through the wild flowers and follow paths up for views which stretch to the horizon. Our girls loved all of the animals, riding the horses and cuddling Millie and Peanut the dogs. The courtyards, patios, gardens, pool and cottages are utterly charming - we didn't want to leave!

There are several aspects that struck me about Cortijo los Lobos: it's a magical place as the valley and views are stunning. The owners are passionate and transmit this in a lovely, calm way. I also felt I was at a unique and special place, because it was largely created for abandoned animals, and this comes across when one wanders around and sees the well-kept horses in their open paddocks.

Carlos, Sawday's Inspector

We had the most wonderful stay in El Granero Viejo at Cortijo los Lobos! The surroundings are completely stunning and so relaxing. The little villa is beautifully decorated and has everything you could need - our private courtyard was amazing. The grounds are so lovely with so many different areas to sit and relax. It was a perfect week away, we feel so refreshed! We really hope we'll come back one day! Thank you June and Clive!

We are a couple in our 70 ‘a and do not ride horses now, but that did not prevent us from having an amazing stay at this beautiful, characterful Cortijo. The owners are delightful and completely dedicated to their home and especially their animals. 14 horses, 2 dogs and 7 cats all kept in amazing condition. From other guests we spoke to the riding was fantastic - out into the beautiful countryside surrounding the house. June (the owner) cooked delicious meals for us every night which we ate outside on their lovely courtyard. We can not recommend this place enough, and my daughter and her fami

This is a magical place to stay whether you come for the riding or just for the beautiful scenery and warm welcome. The accommodation was perfect - private and comfortable and beautifully decorated in a Spanish style. The gardens and courtyard are also wonderful. The pool wasn't open when we visited as it was too early in the season, but there are beautiful views from the pool area. The rides are through breathtaking landscape on June's well cared for horses. They are ridden without bits or shoes which was surprisingly easy. Just a lovely place to stay.

Sue, Brighton

Lovely accommodation set in beautiful gardens and a rural landscape which encourage relaxation. Being able to ride was the icing on the cake, even for a beginner like me and I felt safe at all times. June and Clive run a very special place, its a real haven.

We came to Cortijo los Lobos for a week in October half term and had a fantastic time staying in El Establo. The cottage was very comfortable and well equipped, with plenty of outdoor space (both private and shared with other guests). The heated pool was a favourite with our two young children, as were all the animals. We also thoroughly enjoyed exploring the surrounding area - the authentic Spanish nature of both Villaneuva del Trabuco and Antequera was a joy to experience. Similarly, the surrounding countryside was fantastic to watch and walk in. Many thanks, Clive and June. Gracias!

Fran, Manchester

We arrived to a warm welcome from our hosts, June and Clive and instantly felt at ease. We had booked 2 hours of riding a day, leaving us plenty of time by the pool! This place surpassed all our expectations. The accommodation was traditionally spanish, comfortable and clean. The stunning pool and location were great but the friendly horses and dogs really steal the show! Riding was through the olives groves and on mountain tracks on shoeless, bit-less and very happy horses. As inexperienced riders we gained a lot of confidence and thoroughly enjoyed every minute. We hope to return soon!

Jennifer

We were made to feel instantly at home in this delightful haven in the countryside. The surroundings and the pool were calm and relaxing and for us being adopted by the family pets was an added bonus. Clive and June make a point of understanding peoples preferences and June has a knack of matching her horses to riders for those wanting to take advantage of the option to ride. A gentle hack through olive groves in the early morning sunshine was just a delight even for a nervous rider like me.

Location

The neighbourhood

You're in a valley between two mountains. Walking (and riding) paths criss-cross the landscape which is dotted with smallholdings and old olive trees. A small hamlet 2kms down the road serves tapas and local soups. It's very beautiful and quite remote, the nearest proper village being 6kms away - Villanueva del Trabuco, which has a market, restaurants and shops. Malaga is a 40-minute drive.

Introducing

June & Clive Wolfe

June and Clive moved here with their three children in 2000. Dedication to their rescue animals is their driving passion - June grew up riding in the traditional way but realised when she actually owned horses how much they prefer living in herds and in as natural an environment as possible. They have two friendly, well-behaved rescue dogs and four cats - a few of which live down at the stables.
