The Experience

Enter a half-abandoned hill-top village in this remote, mountain-fringed landscape, and step into a fairy tale. Tucked in the Pyrenees foothills, between three national parks, this is wild Spain; wonderful walking, bird-watching and peace. Mireia and Ferran gave up city jobs to restore the 17th-century farm building – one of four in the one-street village – with traditional materials and a low-impact design (biomass boiler and recycled rainwater). Ferran cooks knock-out Catalan-style meals with regional fare and produce from their organic garden, eaten at a convivial table with mountain vistas. Their garden, with fig and fruit trees, sits below the walled patio; the latter a lovely spot to rest with a book or soak in the hot tub. On cooler days you can get snug in the barrel-vaulted sitting room, the original cattle stabling. There’s a separate games room for children, too. Furnishing throughout is spare yet stylishly under-stated with tiled floors, open rafters and rough white walls keeping bedrooms cool. Bathrooms are crisply modern. Young and passionate, your hosts are a joy. You will unwind, breathe deeply and smile at the views.

Reviews

Our second visit to Mireia and Ferran’s home. This time with our two grandchildren. And we weren’t disappointed. They are super hosts; nothing is too much trouble. Their interest in wildlife and love of the area rubbed off on the children who were completely at home. And they arranged an excellent 4WD excursion with their friend Alberto to a high viewing point to watch Lammergeiers. Superb!

O Chardinet d'a Formiga is a very old house, beautifully renovated by its present owners, Mireya and Ferran, situated in an old village with narrow streets. We had a wonderful few days there, walking, birdwatching and relaxing. Ferran is incredibly helpful in finding activities for his guests and is particularly knowledgeable on local birds and Mireya is helpful in identifying alpine flowers. Their welcome was warm and we would definitely recommend having an evening meal there - always delicious - salads special!

We just spent 4 fabulous days in that beautiful house, O'Chardinet. The owners, Mireia and Ferran are a lovely couple who make you feel like at home. Very good breakfasts and great and delicious dinners shared with them and the guests. Mireia and Ferran are always ready to give you the best possible information regarding places to visit and excursions to make, as they know the area very well. We fully recommend O'Chardinet as a place to stay. Carlos and Beatriz from Barcelona

Stunning location, beautifully restored and converted house, charming host family and really fantastic food. This was our favourite Sawday place so far, and we have stayed in a lot! Thank you Mireia & Ferran!

Laura

What a delightful place, beautiful location and warm, welcoming hosts. Everything was very tastefully appointed and both Dinner and Breakfast delicious. Ferran and Mireia's English is excellent and they ensured that guests from varying countries were included in conversation.

We spent 5 magical nights at O Chardinet. The hosts are warm and welcoming. The home is a work of art having undergone a complete rebuild yet retaining the charm of a country villa. Heated floors, quiet bedrooms, rain-showers, wood and stone, squeaky clean everything! Meals are creative, delicious and above restaurant standard. Hosts have detailed knowledge of the region and can offer guidance on a range of activities. Did I mention how good the meals were? Carefully selected ingredients, health preparations and an elegant home-styled dining experience with no lack of conversation. Incredible.
