The Experience

You’re in the foot of a spectacular valley with the river Ebro sluicing past for otter spotting and peaceful dozing. Friendly Javier and his family welcome you to their home – an authentically restored 13th century millworkers’ home. Stargaze through sky windows in upstairs bedrooms, read by a crackling fire in the characterful sitting room, or lounge on the lawn under leafy trees.

Birds soar around you – head out on an expedition through the Rudrón Nature Reserve with Javier, good telescopes and binoculars. Follow the gorge for miles of beautiful scenery, traditional villages and Roman churches.

The food is a treat: wake up to fresh orange juice, fruit salad, local cheeses and Javier and Valvanera’s delicious take on toasted dishes – try bread topped with peanuts and baked in milk. The dinners are fresh, seasonal and memorable.

Reviews

I don't have to pretend.... we had 2 amazing nights here and the dinners were really delicious. To be able to spot soaring vultures right on the doorstep is a treat! Javier and his family are truly genuine country people and I am only sad we didn't take advantage of one of his bird watching expeditions. Lovely walks, and total peace and quiet save for the river.

As keen birdwatchers we chose to stay here in order to have an experienced guide - which Javier certainly proved to be. We were delighted by all aspects of our stay. The house is lovely, the situation peaceful and the breakfasts and dinners varied and delicious. Most of all we appreciated the warmth and helpfulness of our hosts. We certainly hope to return.

A very pleasant well restored sanctuary in the heart of the Ebro valley. Excellent meals and a very helpful host, who can provide details of local walks. Our room was a surprise - downstairs sitting room, upstairs bedroom and bathroom (yes, a real bath to our great joy). Plus a good seating area in the communal dining room, WIFI works well near the kitchen door, and a guided tour of the old mill on offer.

A Christmas like none other. The valley is a world apart and del Canto is a gem on the riverbank. Though rustic on the outside, the posada is a deceptively modern and well designed hideaway. Pressed linen sheets, cozy blankets, invigorating showers, sleeping loft and lower sitting area, light from above; superb peace and comfort with the music of the river and a toasty fireplace. Meals are careful gourmet preparations with local ingredients. Christmas Eve dinner was beyond words. Javier is an experienced and expert birdwatching guide (and chef). Do not miss your chance to learn from him.

Our first Alisdair Sawday booking and if this is the general standard - WOW. Great rural location, delicious food and most importantly delightful, kindhearted and most interesting hosts. Good walks in wonderful countryside.

We have always used Sawday SPECIAL places to stay. We have stayed in Portugal, Spain, France and the UK. All have been good and a little special but this is, without doubt, the MOST Special. Fantastic food, excellent accommodation, beautiful location, wonderful ambiance. Truly a very special place to stay.

Location

The neighbourhood

The B&B sits right on the edge on the national park underneath limestone cliffs full of birdlife – spot anything from vultures to kingfishers. Head out from the garden to wander the forests, kayak down the river or set off on horseback (easily organised down the road). The impressive waterfalls at Orbaneja del Castillo flow seven miles away – the town is quaint with a few restaurants and bars.
