The Experience

Wonderful – not the sort of place you are likely to chance upon in this vast Spanish countryside. But begin your search in Batea, a pretty little town in a remote part of Catalonia. There is a long rocky track up to the solid old house, deserted among the vineyards and woods, but full of life thanks to Jorge and Clotilde. It was passed on from a grandfather who made his fortune in Cuba but returned home after Independence…if you love dusty, faded old houses you’ll love it here.

Some might focus on the scarce electricity (solar powered) and poor showers; others will love the authenticity. The food especially makes the trip worthwhile and much of the organic produce (olives, vegetables, vines) comes from the farm. Clotilde is a wonderful cook and gives you delicious breakfasts and dinner, served indoors or out.

Walks are sublime, there are many birds to spot and the night skies will take your breath away. A real treat.

We think you'll love

  • Staying in such a time capsule of a house - it's absolute perfection for some
  • Bringing teenagers and letting them discover the joys of life without devices - if they survive the shock
  • Eating gorgeous, organic food, much of it homegrown with their own olive oil and wine

  • The electric lights are dim, the beds and bathrooms are basic and the mobile signal is non-existent
  • The drive here is not for the faint-hearted - 2kms of dirt track after 7kms of deserted road

Reviews

I first inspected la Venta 23 years ago and on returning, very little had changed! The house comes from a bygone era and the owners, Jorge & Clotilde, are totally charming and amazing hosts, making a stay one of the most unique experiences one could possibly have. In a remote part of Cataluña, in a wonderful natural setting, one can just completely let go and enjoy the slow pace of life.

Venta de Sant Joan is a unique and very special place. We are not easy guests (a family with two young children who are curious with lots of questions etc)...but Clotilde and the family are all very friendly, respectful, relaxed and instantly put us at ease and made us feel at home. The food is simple and delicious = perfect after a long drive. The house is amazing, a complete unique experience (we have never stayed in a place quite like it)...and the surroundings, peaceful, beautiful, dreamy - you will feel just that - like you are in another world. Could not recommend it enough.

Location

The neighbourhood

Once you are here it's best to marvel in all the nature, have lovely long walks through the hills and valleys full of vines and olive trees - and let Clotilde's good food nurture you. The nearest town is Batea, 9kms away, where you'll find basic shops and a few tapas bars. There are excellent restaurants in towns such as Gandesa and Calaceite but these are a long drive on winding roads.

Local points of interest from Clotilde de Pascual

  • For walkers - come for a stopover whilst you walk the Camino de Santiago route from Cataluña. There are also countless paths to stroll along around here during your stay.
  • For history lovers, head to the Roman Mausoleum, 9km away, reached along tracks. Nearby also is Gandesa which has the Civil War museum of the biggest and most decisive battle of the war: la Batalla del Ebro.
  • The house itself is filled with tales and memories of the Civil War...it was used by the Lincoln Washington brigade in 1938 before they escaped to the Ebro where just 40 of the 400 managed to reach republican lines.
  • Swimming in the natural pools - nearby are some amazing natural pools, a must for any visitor. Ask us for more information on the best spots for where to go. Come back to stargaze and enjoy the silence of the night.
  • Wine and olive oil tasting - Jorge knows the local bodegas who can lay on tastings of wonderful local wines and olive oils. Just ask for details and we can organise these for you!
  • Exclusive rental also available for 10 guests – we can offer breakfast and dinner, hold events, order a private chef and you’ll have the whole place to yourselves.

Introducing

Clotilde de Pascual

Jorge and Clotilde inherited the farm and they have been coming here most weekends and all holidays since 2000. They have invested much time and energy in the estate and the house and love to share it with guests.
